Welcome to Azza’s Half Hour I’m your host Aaron Gillin. Today on the show we will be focusing on the Australian band John Butler Trio.
1. “Betterman”
You’re listening to Azza’s Half Hour where today we are focusing on the Australian band John Butler Trio. That was a song entitled “Betterman”.
In 1998 a Fremantle busker named John Butler formed a band called the John Butler Trio with drummer Jason McGann and bass guitarist Gavin Shoesmith. The trio released their first album in December of that same year and toured throughout Western Australia in 1999. Next in April 2000 the band would release a 4 track EP entitled “JBT” which featured the song “Pickapart”. One year later John Butler Trio released their second studio album called “Three” which won an ARIA award for “Best Independent Release”. A standout on the album entitled “Betterman” was ranked number 5 on “Triple J’s Hottest 100” for 2001.
In March 2004 with a new line-up the John Butler Trio released an album called “Sunrise Over Sea”. Great tracks from the record were “Treat Yo Mama”, “Peaches And Cream”, “Company Sin”, “Zebra”, “What You Want” and “Hello”. The albums first single “Zebra” was voted in at number 8 on “Triple J’s Hottest 100” for 2003 and reached number 22 on the ARIA charts. It also received a lot of airplay on Australian radio and won “Song Of The Year” at the 2004 APRA awards. “What You Want” was the second single from “Sunrise Over Sea” and peaked at number 29 in Australia.

Welcome back to Azza’s Half Hour where today we are focusing on the John Butler Trio that was a track called “Zebra”.
In December 2004 JBT released an Australia only single called “Something’s Gotta Give” which reached number 47 on the ARIA chart. Then in 2005 the trio released “Live At St. Gallen” an album that was recorded during the “St. Gallen Music Festival” in Switzerland. The album made it to number 1 on the Australian Independent Record charts and featured 13 songs including “Treat Yo Mama”, “Something’s Gotta Give”, “What You Want” and “Betterman”.

In 2007 the John Butler Trio released their fourth studio album “Grand National” which reached number 1 in Australia. Great tracks from “Grand National” were “Funky Tonight”, “Good Excuse”, “Better Than” and “Used To Get High”. The first single “Funky Tonight” charted in at number 15 on the ARIA chart and number 12 on “Triple J’s Hottest 100” for 2006. The fourth single “Used To Get High” was a track about addiction and ranked number 22 on 2007’s “Hottest 100”.

In March 2010 with a new bass guitarist and drummer the trio released “April Uprising” an album which reached the top position on the ARIA chart. JBT recorded 22 songs between 2009 and 2010 at Butler's home based studio in Fremantle and this tracklist was eventually cut down to 15 for the album. “April Uprising” also became the band’s first record to make it into the top 100 on the U.S Billboard charts where it reached number 36. Singles in Australia were “One Way Road”, “Close To You”, “Revolution” “Don’t Wanna See Your Face” and “I’d Do Anything”. The first single “One Way Road” reached number 15 on the Aussie charts and received a high amount of airplay on radio and television.
