ZZ TOP: THE EARLY YEARS
Welcome to Azza’s Half Hour I’m your host Aaron Gillin. Today on the show we will be focusing on the early years of ZZ Top.
1. “Francine”
This is Azza’s Half Hour where today we are focusing on great tracks from the early years of ZZ Top. That was a song entitled “Francine” which reached number 69 on the U.S Billboard charts.
ZZ Top is an American rock band from Houston, Texas which features Billy Gibbons on guitar, Frank Beard on drums and Dusty Hill on bass. The trio have sold over 50 million records worldwide and were inducted into the “Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame” in 2004.
In 1973 ZZ Top released a single called “La Grange” which reached number 41 on the Billboard charts in America and number 21 on the charts in Australia. It is one of the bands most successful tracks and was ranked in at number 74 on Rolling Stone magazine’s “100 Greatest Guitar Songs Of All Time”. “La Grange” has been featured on many films including “Shanghai Noon”, “Armageddon” and “The Dukes Of Hazzard”.
Next in 1975 ZZ Top released a single entitled “Tush” which was the closing track on the band’s fourth studio album. “Tush” is sung by bassist Dusty Hill and charted in at number 20 on the U.S Billboard chart becoming ZZ Top’s first Top 40 hit in America. The track was also named the 67th “Best Hard Rock Song Of All Time” by the TV station VH1 and is a favourite among fans.

In 1980 ZZ Top released the single “I Thank You” which was a cover of the 1968 hit by R&B duo Sam & Dave. ZZ Top’s version reached number 34 on the U.S Billboard chart and appeared on their sixth studio album alongside the fan favourite “Cheap Sunglasses”. During this time ZZ Top remained a popular concert attraction and made their first appearance in Europe.

In March 1983 ZZ Top released a record called “Eliminator” which peaked at number 9 in the U.S, number 5 in Australia and number 3 in the U.K. Singles from one of the band’s most successful albums were “Gimme All Your Lovin’”, “Got Me Under Pressure”, “Sharp Dressed Man”, “TV Dinners” and “Legs”. “Gimme All Your Lovin’” was the albums first single and it reached number 37 on the U.S Billboard chart as well as number 2 on the U.S Mainstream Rock chart. The records third single “Sharp Dressed Man” reached the 8th position on the U.S Mainstream Rock chart, Irish Singles chart and Netherlands MegaCharts. While “Legs” was a track that peaked at number 8 on the U.S Billboard chart, number 6 on the ARIA chart and number 7 in New Zealand. Following the release of “Eliminator” ZZ Top would embark on a worldwide concert tour.
