THE LIVING END
Hello and welcome to Azza’s Half Hour I’m your host Aaron Gillin. Today on the programme we will be focusing on Aussie rock group The Living End. But before we get started with that I have an exclusive interview with Australian country music star Adam Brand to share with you. I caught up with Adam two weeks ago during his sound check just a few hours before his concert in Warrnambool and here is what he had to say.
Adam Brand Interview
It was great to catch up with Adam and I can’t wait to see him next time he returns home. But now let’s get started with some music by Aussie rockers The Living End.
1. “All Torn Down”
You’re listening to Azza’s Half Hour and that was “All Torn Down” by the Australian rock group we are focusing on today The Living End.
The Living End were formed in Melbourne in 1994 and were given their big break in 1995 when they became the support act for American punk rock band Green Day during their Australian tour. After the tour The Living End went into the studio to record their debut EP entitled “Hellbound” which featured 8 songs. After this in November 1996 the band released their next EP entitled “It’s For Your Own Good”.
In October 1998 The Living End released their self titled debut album which became an instant hit in Australia. The record charted at number 1 on the charts and eventually went 5 times platinum. The six singles that came from the album were “Second Solution”, “Save The Day”, “All Torn Down”, “Trapped”, “West End Riot” and this track which spent 69 weeks on the ARIA Top 50 entitled “Prisoner Of Society”.
2. “Prisoner Of Society”
Welcome back to Azza’s Half Hour where today we are focusing on The Living End that was “Prisoner of Society”.
In 2000 The Living End released their next album which was entitled “Roll On”, it reached number 8 on the Australian charts and also went 2 times Platinum. The style of music on the album was comparable to 80’s hard rock and pub rock plus it also proved to critics that the band were not simply defined by their hit “Prisoner of Society”. “Roll On” featured a lot of creativity by the group and also helped establish the fact that they could play other styles as well as their traditional fast-paced rockabilly music. Singles from The Living End’s second album were the title track along with “Dirty Man”, “Carry Me Home” and “Pictures in The Mirror”.
Now on the show here is “Roll On” by The Living End.
3. “Roll On”
Welcome back to Azza’s Half Hour on 3WAY FM that was “Roll On” by the Aussie rockers in focus on today’s show The Living End.
In 2001 The Living End suffered a setback when lead singer Chris Cheney was in a car accident on the Great Ocean Road. The accident left the band unable to perform for a period of time and shortly after Chris’ recovery drummer Travis Demsey decided to leave the group to spend more time with his family. This then left The Living End looking for a drummer which is when Andy Strachan (Strakkan) was accepted as the new member of the band. To test if Andy would be right for the job The Living End performed some gigs under fake name “The Longnecks”. During these events at small venues The Living End tested out some new material for their next album.
In October 2003 the group’s third album “Modern ARTillery” was released in Australia. It featured their comeback single entitled “One Said to the Other” which reached number 19 on the Australian charts and “Who’s Gonna Save Us?” which charted at number 23 on the Triple J Hottest 100. “Modern ARTillery” hit the third position on the Aussie charts and styles of music that were featured on it included punk pop, country and 60’s style rock n roll among others which was different to The Living End’s previous albums. Other standouts from “Modern ARTillery” include “Tabloid Magazine”, “End of the World”, “The Room” and “Jimmy”.
Now here is “Who’s Gonna Save Us?” on Azza’s Half Hour.
