DIESEL
Hello and welcome to another edition of Azza’s Half Hour, I’m your host Aaron Gillin. Today on the show we focus on a popular Aussie artist named Diesel.
1. “Parisienne Hotel”
That was “Parisienne Hotel” by Johnny Diesel & the Injectors on Azza’s Half Hour.
Diesel is a Blues and Rock musician that was born in America in 1966 but moved to Australia with his family in 1971. Diesels father was a professional saxophone player that performed in both the U.S and Australia so Diesel and his siblings were surrounded by music from an early age. After performing in a few bands in his mid-teens Diesel joined a pub rock group named Innocent Bystanders in 1983. After releasing a single called “Lebanon” Diesel left the band in 1986.
After the split from Innocent Bystanders, Diesel formed a new band called Johnny Diesel & the Injectors. It’s not known for certain where the stage name Johnny Diesel came from but there are two versions of the story, one version is that it was a nickname from working at a petrol station and the other is that the name was derived from the bands bassist John Dalzell. After playing as the support act to bands such as The Choirboys and The Radiators, Diesel was hired to work on Jimmy Barnes’ third solo album. Diesel was the lead guitarist for Jimmy Barnes while on tour and The Injectors were also the opening act for the shows. This was the beginning of a long friendship between Barnes and Diesel who are now also brother-in-laws.
Johnny Diesel & the Injectors released their self titled debut album in 1989 and one of the tracks off the album was “Lookin’ for Love” a song that reached the top 40 in Australia. Here it is “Lookin’ for Love” on Azza’s Half Hour.
2. “Lookin’ for Love”
The debut album from Johnny Diesel & the Injectors reached #2 on the ARIA charts and won an ARIA award for the highest selling album, some of the other songs included on the album were “Don’t Need Love” which peaked at #10, “Soul Revival” which reached #9 and “Cry in Shame” which reached #10 on the Aussie charts. Now on the show here are two songs off the album “Cry in Shame” and “Never Last”.
3. “Cry in Shame”
4. “Never Last”
After splitting from The Injectors to go solo Diesel released an album called “Hepfidelity” in 1992. The album hit #1 on the ARIA charts and sold over 200,000 copies. Singles off the album were “Come to me”, “Man Alive”, “One More Time” and “Tip of my Tongue”. Here is “Tip of my Tongue” by Diesel.
5. “Tip of my Tongue”
In 1993 Diesel once again found success at the ARIA awards when he won the Best Album and Best Male Artist trophies. Between 1993 and 2004 Diesel had released a total of 7 albums and many of which hit the top 40 in Australia. In 2005 Diesel once again worked with Jimmy Barnes when he sang a duet and provided musical backing for numerous tracks on the album “Double Happiness”.
In 2006 Diesel released a self-financed album entitled “Coathanger Antennae”. The album took just two months to record and reached #23 on the Aussie charts. Three singles off the album were “Saviour”, “Steal My Sunshine” and “Crazytown”. Here is “Crazytown” by Diesel.
6. “Crazytown”
Welcome back to Azza’s Half Hour that was “Crazytown” by Diesel. In 2008 Diesel released an album that reached #17 in Australia called “Days like These”. The album was part recorded from home and several of the songs came from jams with his band. Then in 2009 Diesel released a raw blues album featuring original and unearthed songs called “Saturday Suffering Fools”. I would like to thankyou for tuning in to my show today and I hope you will be listening in a fortnight. Now to close the show is “Days like These” by Diesel.
