Hello and welcome to Azza’s Half Hour, I’m your host Aaron Gillin. Today on the show we will be focusing on Aussie music legend John Farnham.
1. “One”
Welcome to the show that was “One” by John Farnham on Azza’s Half Hour.
John Farnham was born on the 1st of July 1949 in the United Kingdom and at the age of ten moved to Australia with his family to live in Melbourne. In November 1967, under the stage name Johnny Farnham, he released his first commercially successful recording entitled “Sadie (The Cleaning Lady)” the track reached number 1 on the Australian singles charts and remained there for six weeks.
Johnny Farnham’s first album was called “Sadie” and was released in April 1968, almost immediately after this in November of the same year was his second album entitled “Everybody Oughta Sing a Song” which peaked at number 12 on the Aussie albums charts. Then in 1970 Farnham released his next album entitled “Looking through a Tear” which featured the hit singles “Raindrops keep falling on my head” and “One”. Next in December 1970 came a Christmas album and then in 1971 came three albums which were “Johnny”, “The Best of Johnny Farnham” and “Together”. Between 1972 and 1975 Johnny Farnham released four albums and in 1980 he had changed his stage name to John Farnham and released an album called “Uncovered”. The album reached number 20 on the albums charts and featured four singles.
In 1982 John Farnham became the new lead singer of the Little River Band; during his tenure in the group albums released were “The Net”, “Playing to win” and “No Reins”. Farnham returned back to his solo career in 1986 with the album “Whispering Jack” and at the time of its release it was the highest-selling album by an Aussie in Australia peaking at number one on the album charts for a total of 25 weeks. Singles from “Whispering Jack” were “Reasons”, “A Touch of Paradise”, “Pressure Down” and the number 1 hit, “You’re the Voice”.

After becoming the 1987 Australian of the Year John Farnham released his next album entitled “Age of Reason” in July 1988. The album peaked at number 1 on the ARIA charts and featured the singles “Beyond the Call”, “We’re No Angels”, “Age Of Reason” and the track you are about to hear now “Two Strong Hearts”.

3. “Two Strong Hearts”
In 1990 John Farnham released a new album entitled “Chain Reaction”. The album debuted at number 1 on the Aussie charts and provided the top ten hit singles “Chain Reaction”, “That’s Freedom” and “Burn for you”. Nine of the twelve tracks on the record were co-written by Farnham and unlike previous albums featured more of an acoustic sound rather than an electronic one. Here is the title track from the biggest selling album in Australia for 1990 entitled “Chain Reaction”.

In 1991 Farnham released the live album “Full House” it reached number 2 on the ARIA charts and featured tracks recorded during his 1987, 1989 and 1990 tours of Australia. Also in 1991 John Farnham appeared on the Jimmy Barnes album “Soul Deep” in the duet “When something is wrong with my baby”. Then in 1992 Farnham starred alongside Angry Anderson, Kate Ceberano and Jon Stevens among others in the Australian production of the stage musical, “Jesus Christ Superstar”.
John Farnham released his 15th studio album entitled “Then Again…” in October 1993, the highest selling Australian album of that year reached number 1 on the charts and featured the songs “Seemed Like A Good Idea (At the time)”, “Angels” and “Talk of the town”. After “Then Again…” was the 1996 album “Romeo’s Heart” the record featured the songs “Have a little faith (In us)”, “Don’t Let It End” and “Heart’s On Fire” and it also reached number 2 on the ARIA charts.

In 1999 John Farnham undertook a tour celebrating his 50th Birthday called “I can’t believe he’s 50!” The concerts were supported by a number of Aussie bands and singers including Kate Ceberano, Human Nature and Ross Wilson. A live album recorded during the show that took place on his actual birthday on the 1st of July was released in August of that year.
On the 7th of July 2000 John’s next album entitled “33 (and) 1/3” was released in Australia. The album debuted at number 1 on the ARIA charts and featured the tracks “Man of the Hour”, “You’re The Only One” and this track “Trying to live my life without you”.

In 2002 John Farnham released his next album entitled “The Last Time” songs that were featured on the number 1 charting record include the title track along with “Keep talking” and “No Ordinary World”. After this in 2005 came a covers album entitled “I Remember When I Was Young: Songs from The Great Australian Songbook” tracks on it include the Australian Crawl hit “Reckless”, “Come said the boy” which was made famous by Mondo Rock and also “Girls on the avenue” originally sung by Richard Clapton.
