Welcome to Azza’s Half Hour I’m your host Aaron Gillin. Today is part 2 of our look at the solo career of Jimmy Barnes.
1. “The Weight”
You’re listening to Azza’s Half Hour where today the solo career of Jimmy Barnes is in focus and that was a song entitled “The Weight”.
In June 1994 Jimmy Barnes released an acoustic album called “Flesh And Wood”; the record included many duets with artists such as Diesel, Ross Wilson, The Badloves, Tommy Emmanuel and Don Walker plus peaked at number 2 on the Aussie charts. Singles from “Flesh And Wood” were “The Weight” featuring The Badloves, “It Will Be Alright”, “You Can’t Make Love Without A Soul” and a duet with Diesel entitled “Still Got A Long Way To Go”.
Following this in 1995 Barnes would release his 8th studio album “Psyclone” which made it to the 2nd spot on the ARIA chart. Singles from the record were “Change Of Heart”, “Come Undone” and “Every Beat”. Next in 1996 a greatest hits album called “Hits Anthology” was released, it charted in at number 1 and featured the new single “Lover Lover” which peaked at number 6.
Now on the programme are the tracks “Used To The Truth” from “Psyclone” and “Lover Lover” from “Hits Anthology”.

In 1999 following a Cold Chisel reunion Jimmy Barnes released his 9th studio album called “Love And Fear”. The record would only make it to number 22 on the charts but is still highly regarded by fans and critics.
After this in the year 2000 Barnes would release his second soul album entitled “Soul Deeper: Songs From The Deep South”. It reached the 3rd position on the ARIA chart and featured covers of “Hold On I’m Coming”, “Chain Of Fools”, “Land Of 1000 Dances”, “I Put A Spell On You” and “Dancing In The Street”. The first single from “Soul Deeper” was “Chain Of Fools” a cover of the Aretha Franklin hit from 1967.
Now on Azza’s Half Hour is “Chain Of Fools” by Jimmy Barnes.
4. “Chain Of Fools”
This is Azza’s Half Hour where today the solo career of Jimmy Barnes is in focus and that was a track entitled “Chain Of Fools” from the album “Soul Deeper”.
In July 2005 Barnes released the duet’s album “Double Happiness” which reached number 1 in Australia. It featured various artists including Troy Cassar-Daley, The Living End, Tim Rogers and Diesel as well as Jimmy’s children Mahalia, Jackie, Elly-May, Eliza-Jane and David Campbell. Standout songs on the record were “Sit On My Knee”, “Gonna Take Some Time”, “Resurrection Shuffle” and “Bird On A Wire”. The single “Sit On My Knee” featured Aussie rock band Dallas Crane and made it to number 14 in Australia.
Later that same year Jimmy Barnes was inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame alongside Hunters & Collectors, Smoky Dawson, Renée Geyer, Split Enz, Normie Rowe and The Easybeats. This would make him a 2 time inductee as he had already been inducted in 1993 as a member of Cold Chisel.
2 years after his Hall Of Fame induction Jimmy Barnes released an album called “Out In The Blue” which reached the 3rd position on the Aussie charts. It was mostly written while he recovered from open-heart surgery in early 2007 and standout tracks on the record include the title track along with “Better Off Alone”, “I’m Surprised”, and “When Two Hearts Collide” featuring Kasey Chambers.
Now on the show are the tracks “Sit On My Knee” and “I’m Surprised”.

In 2009 Barnes released his 3rd soul album entitled “The Rhythm And The Blues” which featured covers of tracks from the 1940’s to 1960’s. The record peaked at number 1 on the ARIA chart and standouts included “Shake Rattle & Roll”, “Keep A Knockin’”, “A Fool In Love” and “Red Hot”.
After that in 2010 Jimmy Barnes released his 14th studio album “Rage And Ruin” which made it to the 3rd position on the Aussie charts. “Rage And Ruin” was a return to his rock roots and featured the standouts “God Or Money”, “Turn It Around”, “Largs Pier Hotel” and “Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead”.
