Welcome to Azza’s Half Hour I’m your host Aaron Gillin. Today a Guy Sebastian cover’s record entitled “The Memphis Album” is in focus.
1. “Soul Man”
You’re listening to Azza’s Half Hour and that was a track entitled “Soul Man” by Guy Sebastian. Today on the programme we are focusing on “The Memphis Album” a record released by Guy Sebastian in November 2010 that reached the 3rd position on the ARIA charts. The album features cover versions of well known soul songs originally sung by artists such as Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Al Green, Eddie Floyd, Otis Redding and Ray Charles.
Guy actually travelled to Ardent Studios in Tennessee to make “The Memphis Album” which was recorded live to analogue tape. Sebastian alongside members of the legendary soul band “Booker T. & the M.G.’s” Steve Cropper, Donald Dunn and Steve Potts recorded 15 tracks in 4 days.
A standout on “The Memphis Album” is a Wilson Pickett song entitled “In The Midnight Hour”. When it was originally released in 1965 the track topped the American R&B chart and reached number 21 on the pop charts. The song has become a soul standard and in 2004 charted in at number 134 on Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

2. “In The Midnight Hour”
This is Azza’s Half Hour where today “The Memphis Album” by Guy Sebastian is in focus and you were just listening to a track entitled “In The Midnight Hour”.
A soul song on the record that Sebastian covered from 1956, “Hallelujah I Love Her So”, was originally sung by Ray Charles and made it to number 5 on the Billboard R&B chart. Since the tracks release it has been covered by various artists such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Stevie Wonder, The Animals and Frank Sinatra.
Another track on “The Memphis Album” entitled “I Can’t Stand The Rain” was first released by Ann Peebles in 1973. The song peaked at number 38 on the U.S Pop Chart and number 6 on the R&B chart. As well as Sebastian’s 2010 cover the song has been recorded by numerous artists including Michael Bolton, Seal and the cast of the 1991 film The Commitments.
Now on the show are both “Hallelujah I Love Her So” and “I Can’t Stand The Rain” by Guy Sebastian.

Another track on the covers album called “Take Me To The River” was released in 1974 by American gospel singer Al Green. In 2004 “Take Me To The River” charted in at number 117 on Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
One more standout on “The Memphis Album” is a cover of soul duo Sam & Dave’s 1966 hit “Hold On I’m Coming”. The track made it to number 1 on the Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart and number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100.
