Hello and welcome to Azza’s Half Hour, I’m your host Aaron Gillin. Today on the show we will be focusing on British rock band Queen.
1. “Killer Queen”
Welcome back to Azza’s Half Hour where today we are focusing on British rockers Queen that track was entitled “Killer Queen”.
Queen was formed in the 1970’s and consisted of lead singer Freddie Mercury, lead guitarist Brian May, bass guitarist John Deacon and drummer Roger Taylor. Their first album was released in 1973 and was simply entitled “Queen”, it was certified platinum in the UK and singles from the album were “Keep Yourself Alive” and “Liar”. Less than 12 months later the band’s second album called “Queen II” was released it reached number 5 on the UK charts and number 79 in Australia, the album featured the single “Seven Seas of Rhye” which became the groups first hit song peaking at number 10 in the UK.
On the 1st of November 1974 Queen released their third studio album “Sheer Heart Attack” which launched the band into popularity in the UK and internationally. The record also provided the band with their first top 20 hit in the United States entitled “Killer Queen”. Other singles from “Sheer Heart Attack” were “Flick of the Wrist”, “Now I’m here” and “Lily Of The Valley”.
In 1975 after a world tour Queen released their 4th studio album entitled “A Night at the Opera”. The record took its name from an American film of the same name which the band had watched one night when they were recording the album. “A Night at the Opera” was one of Queen’s greatest albums and it went triple platinum in the U.S plus it also featured the two singles “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “You’re My Best Friend”. “Bohemian Rhapsody” was written by Freddie Mercury and reached number 1 on the charts in Australia, the UK, Canada, and New Zealand. The track was complicated to record and the choir effect on the song was created by having Mercury, May and Taylor sing their vocal parts continually for ten to twelve hours a day, resulting in 180 separate overdubs.
Now from Queen’s 4th studio album “A Night at the Opera” here is “Bohemian Rhapsody”.
2. “Bohemian Rhapsody”
Welcome back that was “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen.
In 1976 Queen released their next album “A Day at the Races” much like “A Night at the Opera” it was also named after an American film. “A Day at the Races” reached number 1 on the British charts as well as number 1 in Japan and the Netherlands. Standout tracks on the record were “Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy”, “Long Way” and “The Millionaire Waltz”. Another classic Queen song entitled “Somebody to Love” was featured on “A Day at the Races” and the gospel-inspired track was much like “Bohemian Rhapsody” in the way it was recorded.
Now on Azza’s Half Hour is the song that peaked at number 2 on the U.K charts “Somebody to Love” by Queen.
3. “Somebody to Love”
You’re listening to Azza’s Half Hour that was “Somebody to Love” by the British rock band we are focusing on today Queen.
In 1977 Queen released their 6th studio album “News of the World” it reached number 1 on the charts in many countries including Canada, Brazil, France, Mexico and Ireland. Standout tracks were “We Will Rock You”, “We Are the Champions”, “Spread Your Wings” and “It’s Late”. “We Will Rock You” was written by Queen lead guitarist Brian May and the cult classic is known for its rhythmic beat made by stomping and clapping.
Here is the track that in 2004 was ranked in the Rolling Stone Magazine’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” “We Will Rock You”.
4. “We Will Rock You”
In 1978 Queen released their next studio album entitled “Jazz” the record reached number 2 on the U.K charts. Standouts on “Jazz” were “Don’t Stop Me Now”, “Jealousy”, “Fat Bottomed Girls” and “Bicycle Race”. “Bicycle Race” was written by Freddie Mercury and was released as a single with the track “Fat Bottomed Girls”.

5. “Bicycle Race”
Welcome back to Azza’s Half Hour that was “Bicycle Race” by Queen.
In 1980 Queen released their 8th studio album which was entitled “The Game” it reached number 1 on the charts in both the U.K and U.S and here in Australia it peaked at number 11. Great songs featured on “The Game” include “Save Me”, “Play the Game”, “Need Your Loving Tonight”, “Another One Bites The Dust” which peaked at number 5 in Australia, and this track which reached number 1 in Australia “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”.
6. “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”
On the 21st of May 1982 Queen released an album entitled “Hot Space” it featured the singles “Under Pressure”, “Body Language”, “Calling All Girls”, and “Back Chat”. “Hot Space” reached number 4 in the U.K and number 22 in the U.S. Then in 1984 Queen released their 10th studio album “The Works” standout tracks on the record were “Radio Ga Ga” and “I Want to Break Free”.
In 1986 Queen released their 11th studio album “A Kind of Magic” it reached number 1 in the U.K and standouts were the title track along with “One Vision”, “Friends Will Be Friends” and “Who Wants to Live Forever”. 3 years later Queen released “The Miracle” which was their 12th album. “The Miracle” reached number 4 on the Aussie charts and singles from it were the title track plus “I Want It All”, “Breakthru”, “The Invisible Man”, and “Scandal”.
In 1988 rumours began to spread that Freddie Mercury was suffering from AIDS this was denied by the group and they went on to release an album entitled “Innuendo” in 1991 which along with the title track featured the singles “The Show Must Go On” and “These Are The Days of Our Lives”. This album was released 10 months before the death of Freddie Mercury who was in fact sick with AIDS. On the 20th of April 1992 a tribute concert for Freddie was held at Wembley Stadium. The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert was televised to over 1.2 billion viewers worldwide and money raised went to AIDS charities. Four years after the death of Mercury in 1995 Queen released their final album as the original line-up entitled “Made in Heaven”. The album was constructed from Freddie’s final recordings and material left over from previous studio albums. “Made in Heaven” reached number 1 on the U.K charts and number 3 on the Australian charts.
