Welcome to Azza’s Half Hour I’m your host Aaron Gillin. Today on the show we will be focusing on the Australian rock group Eskimo Joe.
1. “Take A Rest”
This is Azza’s Half Hour where today Eskimo Joe is in focus and you were just listening to a song called “Take A Rest”.
Eskimo Joe is an Australian rock trio from East Fremantle which was formed in 1997. The group’s first EP “Sweater” was released in 1998 and their debut album entitled “Girl” came out in July 2001. The debut album reached number 29 on the ARIA charts and featured the singles “Wake Up”, “Who Sold Her Out”, “Planet Earth” and “Liar”. “Wake Up” won an award for Best Video at the 2001 ARIA’s while “Who Sold Her Out” peaked at number 94 on the Aussie charts.
Eskimo Joe’s next album “A Song Is A City” was released in May 2004. It made it to the second position on the ARIA charts and featured singles “Older Than You”, “From The Sea”, “Smoke”, and “Life Is Better With You”. “From The Sea” was used in TV commercials for the West Coast Eagles Football Club and broke the top 40 while “Older Than You” was a top 50 hit that Eskimo Joe performed at the 2004 ARIA Music Awards.
Now on Azza’s Half Hour are both “From The Sea” and “Older Than You”.

In June 2006 Eskimo Joe released “Black Fingernails, Red Wine” an album which was heavily influenced by early 80’s rock bands such as INXS and Icehouse. It was the group’s first number 1 charting album in Australia and featured the songs “Sarah”, “New York”, “Breaking Up” and “London Bombs”. The title track “Black Fingernails, Red Wine” reached number 6 on the Aussie charts and won an ARIA award for Single Of The Year in 2006. The album is also notable for the fact that it was released as Eskimo Joe’s debut album in the U.S.

In May 2009 Eskimo Joe released their fourth studio album “Inshalla” named after the Arabic word meaning “God willing”. The record topped the Aussie charts and was nominated for the Best Album Award at the 2009 ARIA’s. “Foreign Land” was the first single from “Inshalla” and made it to number 13 on the Aussie charts plus won an APRA Award for Rock Work Of The Year in 2010. Other standout songs on the album were the title track along with “Losing Friends Over Love” and “Don’t Let Me Down”.
After this in August 2011 Eskimo Joe released “Ghosts Of The Past” an album that reached the third position on the ARIA charts. Standouts on the record include “Love Is A Drug”, “When We Were Kids”, “Speeding Car” and “Echo”. “Ghosts Of The Past” was released on Eskimo Joe’s independent record label Dirt Diamonds and marked a return to the group’s rock roots.
