"storybook" - kasey chambers
Welcome to Azza’s Half Hour I’m your host Aaron Gillin. Today we will be focusing on the Kasey Chambers album “Storybook”.
1. “Happy Woman Blues”
This is Azza’s Half Hour where today the Kasey Chambers album “Storybook” is in focus and you were just listening to a track entitled “Happy Woman Blues”.
“Storybook” is a covers album released by Kasey in 2011 that features songs by artists who influenced her career such as Lucinda Williams, Suzanne Vega, Steve Earle and Cyndi Lauper. Many of the songs have been played live by Kasey on numerous occasions throughout her solo career and also during her time in The Dead Ringer Band plus a covers group with her husband called The Lost Dogs. “Storybook” includes appearances by musical guests Jimmy Barnes, Shane Nicholson and Paul Kelly among others plus made it to number 21 on the ARIA chart.
A track on the record called “Leave The Lights On” was originally sung by country musician John Prine and appeared on an album entitled “Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings”. The album inspired the name of Kasey Chamber’s covers band the Lost Dogs which features her husband Shane Nicholson and Dad, Bill. Kasey names John Prine as a huge influence on her career and an artist she would love to get the opportunity to see live in concert.
One of the great songs on the “Storybook” album is a cover of the Matthew Ryan track “Guilty”. Matthew Ryan is an American country singer who Kasey had the opportunity to see live in Nashville when her family travelled to the U.S for the first time. She was blown away by his gravely rock star voice and “Guilty” is one of the many tracks she fell in love with on that night.
Now on Azza’s Half Hour are both “Leave The Lights On” and “Guilty” by Kasey Chambers.
2. “Leave The Lights On”
3. “Guilty”
Welcome back to Azza’s Half Hour where today we are focusing on the Kasey Chambers covers album “Storybook”. You were just listening to “Leave The Lights On” and “Guilty”.
The first single to be released from Kasey’s 6th studio album was “Luka”. The track originally sung by Suzanne Vega reached the third position on the U.S Billboard Hot 100 when it was released in 1987. Kasey has stated that she was always fascinated by the contrasts of a beautiful melody matched to the dark and hard-hitting topic of domestic violence.
Another standout on “Storybook” is a cover of the Paul Kelly song “Everything’s Turning To White” which was recorded by Kasey and appeared on her EP “On A Bad Day” in 2001. Paul Kelly is one of Kasey’s favourite musicians and she says that if she could swap her career for that of one other person it would be him due to the fact that everyone knows his music but he is still not fussed over like a big celebrity.
Coming up next on the programme are the tracks “Luka” and “Everything’s Turning To White” but first let’s preview some of the other great songs that appear on “Storybook”.

Welcome back to this edition of Azza’s Half Hour where the Kasey Chambers album “Storybook” is in focus.
One more great cover that appears on the record is our final track for today entitled “Too Long In The Wasteland”. It was originally sung by American rock musician James McMurtry. Kasey Chambers’ version of “Wasteland” was recorded back in 2001 for her EP “Not Pretty Enough”. When Kasey had the chance to meet James McMurtry during an appearance on an American radio programme it turned out that he was very unimpressed by her take on the song and he walked away when she tried to give him a copy of it.
