Hello and welcome to Azza’s Half Hour, I’m your host Aaron Gillin. Today on the show we will be focusing on American country music legend Johnny Cash. Stay tuned for some of his biggest hits including “Ring Of Fire” and “I Walk the Line” but now to kick off the programme is “Cry! Cry! Cry!”.

Welcome back that was “Cry! Cry! Cry!” by Johnny Cash on Azza’s Half Hour.
J. R. Cash or Johnny Cash as he is more well-known as was born on the 26th of February 1932 in the United States and passed away at the age of 71 on the 12th of September 2003. During his career as a country musician that spanned over 45 years Johnny released over 50 studio albums and had 13 number one singles.
One of Johnny’s first hit songs was “I Walk the Line” the track was featured on his 1957 debut record entitled “Johnny Cash with His Hot and Blue Guitar”. “I Walk the Line” was written by John and reached number one on the U.S Billboard Hot Country Singles Charts. The song was also ranked at number 30 on the Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Another great song from Johnny Cash’s debut album was “Folsom Prison Blues”, the track was written by Cash and the lyrics were inspired by the American film “Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison”. “Folsom Prison Blues” reached number one on the U.S Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in 1968 and was also featured in the biographical film about the life of Johnny Cash entitled “Walk the Line”.
An interesting fact about this song is that it is AFL superstar Jimmy Bartel’s favourite Johnny Cash song.

Our next two tracks on the show are “Ring Of Fire” and “Get Rhythm”. “Ring Of Fire” was released as a single in April 1993 and was successful on the American country music charts reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. “Ring Of Fire” was also partly written by Johnny’s wife June Carter.
“Get Rhythm” is a song about optimism that appeared on Johnny’s fourth album entitled “Greatest!” the song is a rockabilly song written by Cash and was released in 1969 as a B-Side to the single “I Walk the Line”.

Another popular Johnny Cash song is “A Boy Named Sue” the comical track was first recorded during a concert in San Quentin State Prison in 1969 and reached number 2 on the U.S Billboard Hot 100 chart and also number 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. “A Boy Named Sue” was included on the live album entitled “At San Quentin” and is a song about a young man named Sue that wants revenge on his absent father for giving him a female name.

Welcome back to Azza’s Half Hour where today we are focusing on Johnny Cash that was “A Boy Named Sue” live from San Quentin Prison.
In 2000 Johnny Cash released an album named “American 3: Solitary Man”, the record was part of a series of albums released by Cash that featured original material and covers of other artist’s hits in a stripped-down musical style. A standout track from the third American album was a cover of the U2 classic song “One” Cash’s version of the song has an acoustic sound to it and is one of Johnny’s best covers.
Another cover song from the American series entitled “Hurt” appeared on “American 4: The Man Comes Around” in 2003. “Hurt” was originally performed by the rock band Nine Inch Nails and Cash’s version of the track was voted in at number 60 on Triple J’s Hottest 100 of all time here in Australia. The moving video clip to “Hurt” was also voted as the 5th most influential video of all time by social networking website MySpace.
